Rome Museum Opening Hours 2026: Every Museum at a Glance

Rome's museums follow wildly different schedules. The Vatican closes on Sundays. The Borghese won't let you in without a reservation. State museums close on Mondays but open for free on the first Sunday. The Colosseum changes hours three times a year. If you're trying to fit three or four museums into a few days, the scheduling alone can wreck your plans.

This is every major Rome museum's opening hours for 2026, in one place, checked against each museum's own site in August 2026.

What are the Vatican Museums opening hours?

Monday–Saturday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (last entry 6:00 PM). Visitors are asked to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so treat 7:30 PM as the real end of your visit.

Closed every Sunday, except the last Sunday of the month: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, last entry 12:30 PM, free entry, with guided tours bookable in advance. That free Sunday is skipped when it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 or 26 December, or 31 December.

Also closed 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December.

Ticket: €20 on-site, €25 online (€20 plus the €5 "Skip the Line" booking fee). Reduced €10, plus the same €5 fee online. Free for children under 7. When is the Borghese Gallery open in 2026?

Tuesday–Sunday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Five strict 2-hour time slots: 9–11 AM, 11 AM–1 PM, 1–3 PM, 3–5 PM, 5–7 PM. Maximum 360 visitors per slot. Closed Mondays.

Reservation is mandatory. No walk-ins, no exceptions. The official site opens slots roughly 10 days before the visit date. In peak season, they sell out within hours. Free on the first Sunday of each month, but you still need a reservation (€2 fee applies).

What are the Colosseum opening hours?

Hours change three times a year, and the Colosseum opens half an hour before the Roman Forum and Palatine.

• 29 March – 30 September: 8:30 AM – 7:15 PM (last entry 6:15 PM)
• 1 – 24 October: closes 6:30 PM (last entry 5:30 PM)
• 25 October – 28 February: closes 4:30 PM (last entry 3:30 PM)

The Roman Forum and Palatine open at 9:00 AM in all three bands. Closed 25 December and 1 January. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November.

Ticket: €18 standard, covering the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, valid 24 hours. Full Experience with underground and arena: €24, valid two consecutive days. Tickets carry the holder's name and you need matching ID at the gate. Timed slots are compulsory for the Colosseum and sales open 30 days ahead, selling out fast in summer. When can you visit the Capitoline Museums?

Daily: 9:30 AM – 7:30 PM (last entry 6:30 PM). Open every day, including weekends. Reduced hours on 24 and 31 December (closing at 2:00 PM) and a late start on 1 January (11:00 AM – 8:00 PM). Closed 1 May and 25 December.

Ticket: €15, or €9.50 reduced for non-residents aged 6 to 25. Rome and Metropolitan City residents enter free with ID since February 2026. Non-residents get 50% off in the last two hours of opening every Wednesday, which is the cheapest quiet slot of the week. Free on the first Sunday of the month. What are the Palazzo Barberini opening hours?

Tuesday–Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM (last entry 6:00 PM). Closed Mondays, 25 December and 1 January.

Ticket: €15, covering both Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Corsini, valid 20 days. EU citizens aged 18–25 pay €2. Under 18 free. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November.

Home to Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes and Raphael's La Fornarina. One of the least crowded major museums in Rome.

When is MAXXI open?

Tuesday–Sunday: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM. The ticket office shuts an hour before the museum. Closed every Monday, 1 May and 25 December.

Ticket: €15 at the desk, €14 online. Reduced €12 (€11 online) for 18–25s. Under 18 free. Through August 2026 there is a flat €10 rate for everyone, in place while energy efficiency works run in parts of the building. MAXXI is a foundation rather than a state museum, so it does not take part in Domenica al Museo: there is no free first Sunday here.

Two caveats if you're going this summer. The Large Glass is closed until 3 September and Andrea Pazienza. They Don't Always Die until 1 September, which is a real chunk of the programme. Check what's actually open before you buy.

What are the Galleria Doria Pamphilj hours?

Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (last entry 6:00 PM). Friday–Sunday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (last entry 7:00 PM). Closed Wednesdays, 1 January, Easter and 25 December.

Ticket: €16 at the door, €17 booked online, audio guide included. Under 12 free. No free entry days, because this is a private collection and not part of the state Domenica al Museo program. Booking is recommended rather than compulsory. The Secret Apartments are a separate ticket sold by a different operator.

Worth knowing: the audio guide is narrated by a member of the Doria Pamphilj family. The collection includes Velázquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X, one of the most reproduced paintings in art history.

When is Castel Sant'Angelo open?

Tuesday–Sunday: 9:00 AM – 7:30 PM (last entry 6:30 PM). Closed Mondays, 25 December and 1 January.

The Monday rule now has an exception. Since 3 August 2026, the "Lunedì di Castello" scheme opens the castle on the first Monday of every month through the end of 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM (last entry 7:00 PM), on a dedicated €5 ticket. That is the cheapest way into any major Rome monument, and on the one weekday when almost everything else is shut.

Ticket: €18 since 1 July 2026. EU citizens aged 18–25 pay €2. Under 18 free. Free on the first Sunday of the month, with tickets issued at the box office only. Your ticket also gets you into the Casa Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi and the Casa Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen free, on the day of your visit and the two days after.

What are the Pantheon opening hours?

Daily: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Last entry 6:30 PM. Closed 1 January and 25 December. Through 31 August 2026 there is also an evening opening, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM every day except Thursdays, last entry 10:30 PM. Hours can shift for religious celebrations, so check the day before if you're on a tight schedule.

Ticket: €7. EU citizens 18–25 pay €2. Free for under 18s and on the first Sunday of the month. Online booking is mandatory on paid days. See our Pantheon tickets guide.

When is Palazzo Venezia open?

Daily: 9:30 AM – 7:30 PM. Last entry 6:45 PM.

Ticket: €18 full, including the current temporary exhibition, €5 reduced for 18–25s, free for under 18s and on the first Sunday of the month. One ticket covers Palazzo Venezia, the Vittoriano's Panoramic Terrace and the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, and it stays valid for seven days from issue. On free first Sundays it is valid only that day. The Vittoriano monument itself and the Giardino grande of Palazzo Venezia are free to walk into with no ticket.

Evening openings run 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM (last entry 10:45 PM) on set dates between June and September 2026: 5, 12 and 26 June, 10 and 24 July, 7 and 21 August, 11 September (Vittoriano only) and 26 September. How should you plan your Rome museum visits?

Most state museums close on Mondays: Borghese, Palazzo Barberini, Castel Sant'Angelo, MAXXI and GNAM. On a Monday in Rome your options are the Vatican (Monday–Saturday), the Colosseum, the Capitoline, the Pantheon, Palazzo Venezia and Doria Pamphilj, which closes Wednesdays instead. On the first Monday of the month you can add Castel Sant'Angelo from 2 PM.

The first Sunday of the month is the best day for free entry. The Colosseum, Borghese, Capitoline, Palazzo Barberini, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pantheon, Palazzo Venezia and GNAM are all free. The catch: the Borghese still requires a reservation, GNAM requires an online booking, and the Colosseum will have queues. The Vatican runs its own schedule, free on the last Sunday of the month, never the first. The two dates are never the same weekend.

If you're planning a museum-heavy trip, book the Borghese and Vatican first. Those two have the tightest availability. Everything else is flexible.

What day are Rome museums closed?

Most state museums close on Mondays (Borghese Gallery, Palazzo Barberini, Castel Sant'Angelo, MAXXI, GNAM). The Colosseum, Capitoline Museums, Pantheon and Palazzo Venezia are open daily. The Vatican closes every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month. Doria Pamphilj closes Wednesdays, not Mondays. Since 3 August 2026, Castel Sant'Angelo also opens on the first Monday of each month, 2 PM to 8 PM, on a €5 ticket.

When are Rome museums free?

The first Sunday of every month, under the Domenica al Museo program. The Colosseum, Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Barberini, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pantheon, Palazzo Venezia and GNAM are all free. The Borghese Gallery is free too but still requires a reservation, and GNAM requires an online booking. The Vatican has its own free day: the last Sunday of each month, 9 AM to 2 PM with last entry at 12:30 PM. MAXXI is a foundation and Doria Pamphilj is a private collection, so neither takes part. State sites are also free on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November.

Do Rome museums have different summer and winter hours?

The Colosseum does, in three bands: from 29 March to 30 September it closes at 7:15 PM (last entry 6:15 PM), from 1 to 24 October at 6:30 PM, and from 25 October to 28 February at 4:30 PM. Palazzo Venezia and the Vittoriano run late evening openings until 11:30 PM on set dates between June and September. Most other museums keep the same hours year-round. Always confirm on the official website before your visit.

Which Rome museums need advance booking?

The Borghese Gallery requires mandatory timed reservations, with no walk-ins, ever. The Colosseum requires a timed entry slot and issues tickets in the buyer's name, so you need matching ID at the gate. GNAM requires an online booking on free Sundays. The Vatican Museums and Doria Pamphilj strongly recommend advance booking, especially from April through October.
