Pompeii is where it was found. The MANN is where it actually is. The ruins give you the streets; this museum gives you the art that was inside them.

Optimized path 3–4 hours
Farnese hall Mosaic mezzanine Frescoes & Egyptian floor
01
Start with the Farnese hall ~50 min

The colossal Roman sculptures the Bourbons inherited. The Farnese Bull is the largest single sculpture recovered from antiquity, carved from one block; the Farnese Hercules stands nearby. See them while you're fresh — they set the scale for everything above.

02
The mosaic mezzanine ~50 min

The floors and walls lifted from Pompeii. Find the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun — two million tesserae showing Alexander charging Darius. Look at the spear and the panic on the Persian faces.

03
Frescoes, Secret Cabinet, then Egypt ~60 min

Upstairs: whole Pompeii walls with colour intact, the bronzes from the Villa of the Papyri, and the timed-entry Secret Cabinet. Save the Egyptian rooms for last — strong, and the quietest part of the museum.

Closed Tuesdays

The single most common mistake. The MANN shuts every Tuesday — build your Naples days around it.

The Secret Cabinet is timed

It runs on timed entry and closes entirely on free-admission days, along with the Egyptian and Magna Graecia sections.

It's a half-day, not a stop

Three to four hours for the main floors. With two, take the mosaics and the Farnese hall and skip the rest.

Rarely sells out

Booking ahead saves the desk queue, but you won't usually be locked out — the official site is the cheapest route.

The Farnese Bull, MANN Naples
01
Farnese hall (ground floor) Roman copy, 2nd c. AD
The Farnese Bull

Why it matters: The largest single sculpture recovered from antiquity, carved from one block of marble.

What to notice: Walk all the way around it. The myth — Dirce tied to a bull — only reads from certain angles, and the scale only lands up close.

The Alexander Mosaic, MANN Naples
02
Mosaic mezzanine c. 100 BC · House of the Faun, Pompeii
The Alexander Mosaic

Why it matters: Two million tesserae showing Alexander charging Darius at the Battle of Issus, lifted from Pompeii.

What to notice: Find Darius's face — the panic is the point. Then look at the fallen Persian reflected in a dropped shield.

The Secret Cabinet (Gabinetto Segreto), MANN Naples
03
Gabinetto Segreto (timed) Pompeii & Herculaneum
The Secret Cabinet

Why it matters: Around 250 erotic objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum, locked away for centuries and now on timed view.

What to notice: It's social history, not shock value — these images were everyday décor and shop signs. Book the timed slot; it's closed on free days.

Notice the Farnese provenance These giants came to the Bourbons by inheritance, not excavation — a royal collection inside an archaeology museum.
Compare ruins to museum Pompeii keeps the streets; the MANN keeps the mosaics and frescoes that were inside the houses.
Track the mosaic's scale Two million tesserae in the Alexander Mosaic — step back for the battle, step in for the panic.
Look up at the frescoes Whole Pompeii walls survive with colour intact — garden scenes and portraits, not fragments.
Find Egypt at the end One of Italy's largest Egyptian collections, and the quietest rooms in the building — save them for last.
