Acropolis Tickets Sold Out?
Your morning slot is gone and the official store shows nothing useful. Unlike the Alhambra, nobody holds a published reseller quota here, so the fixes are different: the late slots, the change rule, and knowing which ticket you can still move.
Your morning slot is gone, and the blogs that told you to book weeks ahead are no help now. Here is what they skip: at the Acropolis, "sold out" is usually about the hour, not the day.
In 3 minutes:
- The site admits 20,000 people a day in one-hour slots, about 3,000 in the first hour and 2,000 in the second. The early slots go first; the late ones hold longest.
- Official tickets (€30) can be moved up to 2 hours before entry, twice per ticket. That is why slots come back.
- No reseller quota is published here, unlike the Alhambra, where 39% of capacity is reserved for agents by law. Resellers are worth checking, not counting on.
Why do Acropolis tickets sell out?
Every visitor needs a timed ticket, and each hour has its own quota inside a 20,000 daily cap. Cruise passengers and tour groups aim for the cool morning hours, so 8:00 and 9:00 vanish first in summer, often weeks out. The rest of the day empties in order. When the official store looks full, it is usually full for the hours you wanted.
Where to book
Our take: If the official store still has a late slot, take it, because you can move it later; if it has nothing for your date, GetYourGuide is the next place to look, as long as you are sure of the day.

What do I do if Acropolis tickets are sold out?
Work down this list. It runs from cheapest to most expensive.
1. Take a late slot. The last slot of the day runs until closing: 17:00 to 18:30 in early October, earlier in winter. It costs you some light on the marble and, in summer, a lot of heat. It also has the thinnest crowds.
2. Watch for returns. The official store lets every ticket move twice, up to 2 hours before entry. People who change plans release their slot back into the calendar. Check the store again the evening before and the morning of your visit.
3. Check GetYourGuide. The €36 timed ticket with an audio guide sometimes shows a slot when the store doesn't, and the listing says it is likely to sell out. Read the small print: it is non-refundable and the date and slot can't be changed for any reason, so it is stricter than the official ticket.
4. Go private, if money is no object. The ministry's own Acropolis Experience opens the hill outside normal hours for up to 5 people with a private guide. It costs €5,000 per group, per the official experiences store. It exists; it is not a plan for most people.
What if every option is gone?
See it from across the way. The Areopagus, the rocky hill just below the Propylaea, is free and gives you the gateway and the cliffs at eye level.
Do the museum the same day. The Acropolis Museum sits at the foot of the south slope with its own tickets and the original sculptures, including the Caryatids. Our Acropolis vs Acropolis Museum guide says when the museum alone is enough.
Don't plan around a free day. The first and third Sundays from November to March are free for everyone, and those slots still need booking. Treat them as a bonus, not a fallback.

Frequently asked questions
What do I do if Acropolis tickets are sold out?
Check the late-afternoon slots on tickets.hh.gr first: the hourly quota shrinks across the day, but demand shrinks faster, so the last slots before closing hold longest. Then check GetYourGuide's timed entry ticket (€36 with audio guide), which sometimes still shows a slot for your date. Keep looking at the official store the day before: official tickets can be moved up to 2 hours before entry, so slots come back.
How far in advance do Acropolis tickets sell out?
In June to August the 8:00 and 9:00 slots go first, often weeks ahead, because the first hour admits about 3,000 people and the second about 2,000 out of a 20,000 daily cap. Afternoon slots usually last until a few days before. In October the store had every slot open for the following day when we checked.
Can I change an Acropolis ticket if I booked the wrong time?
On the official store, yes: up to 2 hours before your slot, a maximum of two changes per ticket. Tickets are non-refundable. GetYourGuide's entry ticket is stricter: its product page says the date and time slot cannot be changed for any reason.
Can I just turn up at the Acropolis without a ticket?
Timed entry is required for every visitor. Once a slot or the day's 20,000 cap is full there is nothing to buy at the gate, so turning up without a booking in summer is a gamble you will usually lose.
