Naples Underground Tickets 2026

Tickets from €10, guided only. It's 40 metres down a candlelit Greek-Roman aqueduct turned WWII shelter — here's what the tour covers and who should skip it.

3-min read · Verified June 24, 2026

Two storeys under the noise of the Centro Storico, Naples keeps a second city. You go down 136 steps into a Greek-Roman aqueduct that became an air-raid shelter, and the temperature drops, the light goes, and the traffic disappears.

It is one of the best things to do in Naples, and one of the easiest to do wrong. You can't go down alone, and you shouldn't go down at all if tight spaces unsettle you.

How much are Naples Underground tickets in 2026?

Adult: €10 at the door (Piazza San Gaetano 68). Reduced: €8 (ages 5–17). Under 5: free. Skip-the-line online: around €15. Combo tickets (several underground sites): roughly €25–45.

The visit is guided only — there's no self-guided option.

Our take: The €10 door price is fine on a quiet weekday morning; pay the extra ~€5 for skip-the-line in summer, at weekends, or when you need a guaranteed English tour slot.

Is Naples Underground worth visiting?

Yes, with the right expectations. The Greeks cut these tunnels to quarry tufa stone and channel water; the Romans expanded them into an aqueduct that fed the city for centuries. During the Second World War, Neapolitans sheltered down here from the bombing, and you still see the beds, graffiti and rusted relics they left. One stretch opens into the Greco-Roman theatre where Nero is said to have performed, now reached through the back of an ordinary apartment building. It's history you walk through, not history behind glass.

What to look for

Track the three layers as you descend. Aqueduct, wartime shelter, Roman theatre — three Naples in one route.

Notice the cistern walls. Smooth where water sat for centuries, tool-marked where the Greeks cut.

Look for the wartime traces. Beds, toys and graffiti from the families who sheltered here.

Find the theatre behind the apartment. The "lost" Roman theatre survives inside later buildings — the guide opens a door most people walk past.

Feel the temperature drop. Bring a layer; it's cool down there even in August.

What do most visitors wish they knew about Naples Underground?

It's narrow and candlelit in parts. One section is crossed by candle, single file, in tight passages. If claustrophobia is a real issue, this is the tour to skip.

It's guided only, on set times. You join a scheduled tour in English or Italian (or follow the free app). Turning up off-schedule can mean a wait for your language.

136 steps down, and back up. No lift, uneven surfaces, not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Wear proper shoes.
