Everyone queues for the Accademia's David. A ten-minute walk away, Donatello's bronze David stands in the middle of a near-empty room, and you can walk a full circle around him. The Bargello holds the most concentrated collection of Renaissance sculpture in Florence, and most visitors walk right past it.

Where to book
Our take: Buy at the door or online at the official site — the Bargello rarely has a queue, so there is no booking premium worth paying. The one reason to book a third-party guided tour is if you want the sculpture explained as you go.
The building came first. Built in 1255, it was the seat of the city's chief magistrate, then a police headquarters and prison — the bargello was the police chief. In 1865 it became Italy's first national museum. While the Uffizi and Accademia tell Florence's story through paint, the Bargello tells it through bronze and marble.
What to look for at the Bargello
Walk a full circle around Donatello's bronze David. Cast around the 1440s, it was the first freestanding nude bronze since antiquity. No rope, no glass — you see the back, which is the point most people miss.
Compare the two competition panels on the first floor. Ghiberti and Brunelleschi each cast a Sacrifice of Isaac for the 1401 Baptistery doors contest. They hang side by side. Ghiberti won; Brunelleschi went on to build the dome.
Find Michelangelo's Bacchus on the ground floor. Carved at 22, the god of wine stands slightly off balance, as if mid-stumble. It is the only Michelangelo here that reads as deliberately imperfect.
Stand in front of Donatello's St. George. Originally carved for Orsanmichele, the figure leans forward, weight on the front foot, watching something off to the side. Tension held in marble.
What do most visitors wish they knew about the Bargello?
Start upstairs and work down. The Donatello Hall is on the first floor, the Michelangelos on the ground floor. Most people do it backwards and hit the bronzes after their attention is gone. Reverse it.
Go at 9:30 on a weekday and you'll have rooms to yourself. Visitors report no wait even during Holy Week, when the rest of Florence is jammed. This is the quietest major museum in the city.
The €26 Accademia combo is the smart buy if you want both Davids. It runs 48 hours, so you can split them across two days and skip the Accademia's worst lines by going early.
When you need a break, the courtyard is free to sit in. Carved coats of arms cover the walls, and it stays cool and empty while the streets outside fill up.

Frequently asked questions
How much are Bargello Museum tickets in 2026?
Standard entry is €12, up from €10 since February 1, 2026. A €26 cumulative ticket (valid 48 hours) covers both the Bargello and the Accademia Gallery. A €38 ticket (valid 72 hours) adds the Medici Chapels, Orsanmichele, and Palazzo Davanzati. Book direct at bargellomusei.it.
Is the Bargello worth visiting?
If you care about sculpture, yes. It holds Donatello's bronze David, four works by Michelangelo, and Renaissance bronzes by Cellini and Giambologna, in a 13th-century building that stays quiet even in peak season. Most visitors spend about 1 to 1.5 hours.
When is the Bargello free?
The first Sunday of every month, as part of Italy's Domenica al Museo. In 2026 that falls on June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6, and so on. No booking on free Sundays — it is first-come, so arrive at 8:15 opening.
Do you need to book Bargello tickets in advance?
Rarely. Unlike the Uffizi and Accademia, the Bargello seldom has a queue, and walk-ups are usually fine on weekdays. Book ahead only for a free Sunday or if you want a guided tour.
What are the Bargello opening hours?
Tuesday to Sunday, 8:15 AM to 6:50 PM (last entry 6:00 PM), since the museum system unified its hours on March 15, 2026. Closed every Monday, plus January 1, May 1, and December 25.
If you only have time for one sculpture museum in Florence, the Accademia has the famous David. The Bargello has everything else — and room to breathe while you look.
